On Behalf of | May 5, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Falling asleep behind the wheel is a serious concern because it puts not only the driver but also other people on the road at risk. Unfortunately, one such incident recently occurred in New Jersey when a 17-year-old Hackensack man fell asleep behind the wheel.

According to news reports, the man’s car, a Hyundai Elantra, crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle, a Volkswagen Tiguan, which was being driven by a 22-year-old woman. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital where the woman was treated for a fractured wrist. The driver of the Elantra, who fell asleep, denied medical attention.

Officers from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigations Unit and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation reached the scene to collect evidence. Per reports, the man can expect to face charges in the coming days.

Get the compensation you deserve

A serious car accident can change your life. Often times, the physical recovery is only the beginning of a long road back to normal. You may also be faced with medical debt, lost wages, and mental trauma.

The odds may not seem in your favor, but it’s important to remember victims have rights. If your injuries were the result of negligence or wrongdoing, you may be entitled to compensation.

The first step is contacting an experienced personal injury lawyer. They can offer candid advice and provide options for how to proceed.

New Jersey residents shouldn’t hesitate to get started. The State imposes a two-year statute of limitations on all personal injury lawsuits; failure to act promptly could mean permanently forfeiting the right to legal recourse.
